Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I watched a server fill a basket of chips with her hands -- TWICE. She definitely waited tables and handled dirty plates and checks, so she wasn't just back in the kitchen. Luckily she wasn't waiting our table, but I was still grossed out. The food was bland and overpriced, and the atmosphere was terrible. There are better restaurants in that price range within a few blocks away.

Love this place! Great chips and salsa! Love all of the food! Great service too! I eat here at least once per week!
(5)Brandi T.
The wait is always really long, the staff is usually really friendly, the food is okay. It isn't the best mexican food in town and it really isn't cheap. I have to say that I love their chicken nachos...but everything else has been unimpressive (including the salsa).
(3)Justin S.
This place is awesome. The food is great , you have chips and salsa delivered to your table within seconds from sitting down . The entire menu is killer. In my opinion they have the best hard shell tacos in town! Great food, good atmosphere and food is always yummy! Just wish there was one in north Johnson county west Lenexa area:)
(5)G G.
Great service!! Incredible food with rich flavor. Taco shells amazing. Cheese enchiladas the best! Salsa full of flavor. Cheese dip incredible. When so many Mexican restaurants taste the same and seem to have come out of the microwave, this place is unique and our favorite.
(5)Ron L.
Service was good. Food is not bad. Tamales are not really Mexican - enchiladas are good. Indigestion was really bad later. No place to sit while you wait with the PA system blaring - which is very annoying No where near the best Mexican place in KC.

If this place was down the street, I would go there weekly! They atmosphere is lively and the food is wonderful. It is a great place for take out because your order is prepared quickly and it is packaged up perfectly. We go there often with a large group of friends. They are always good about setting us up comfortable seating which isn't always the case when you just show up with a large group. I have never experienced anything but excellent service. Must tries are the house white cheese sauce, anything with grilled pork, the poppers (mainly because of the sauce that it is served with), and I know this is weird, but the wings. Also, they have the BEST margaritas I have ever had....frozen and on the rocks!
(5)Mike B.
This place has a 30 minute wait on a Thursday night, does that sound a three star restaurant...I dont think so. -The salsa is very good.. -The white cheese dip is awesome! -Get the Chubby Burrito! -the fried tacos are excellent! Follow it up with a Dos Equis amber.
(4)Elizabeth P.
Favorite Mexican restaurant in South Kansas City. You might have to wait 5-10 minutes on a Friday or Saturday night, but your future self will thank you. Your future self will be tooting, but still, will thank you.
(5)Ashima D.
Great service. Great prices. And food is amazing and tastes fresh - my favorite Mexican place!
(5)Logan N.
This has been my favorite restaurant for probably the last 15 years. Everyone is always friendly. I have eaten here over 100 times and never been disappointed. The jalapeno dip is amazing.

My husband and I go every Sunday! Guiermo always greets us so enthusiastically and sincerely by asking how are we doing. My husband likes the really hot salsa, so Guiermo has it at our table before we even sit down! That is customer-focus there. He, as well as the other servers, work very hard. We enjoy their chips and salsa as well as their chicken and steak fajitas. I agree with someone else's review about getting rid of the over-head speaker.

I grew up going to Jalapeños in Stanley but haven't been back in several years. Came with my girlfriend on a Tuesday evening and it was steady but not busy. Waiter provided excellent service and we both got fajitas. Food was delicious as expected. My only complaint was that towards the end of our dinner (about 9:15) we were the only ones left in our dining area the lights were turned up a bit and one of the staff started vacuuming the floor and it was loud and distracting for several minutes.
(3)Paul M.
Overpriced, under flavored, and about as authentic as the Frito Bandito. If you like knock-off Mexican food, this place is for you. Basically, its a block of melted processed cheese with jarred jalapenos on top. They don't really cook, they just assemble. It's always packed. I guess people like it.

You know, I thought I was the only one infatuated with Jalapenos since I was a little kid. Grandmaster Yelper Scott M. may be a more die-hard fan than me when it comes to loyalty and Jalapenos. This place has been a staple in my life as far back as I can remember. Having grown up with my fathers side of the family all immigrant's from various regions of Mexico, I spent many a day roaming the streets of Argentine, Armourdale, and what many of us know as the "West Side" of Kansas City, Missouri. Family members running Mexican restaurants, bars, and other businesses, Jalapeno's almost felt like home on the outskirts of southern Johnson County (well, at least it was considered the outskirts 20+ years ago). No, Jalapeno's IS NOT authentic Mexican cuisine by any means. But what it is, will remind you of what the early Kansas City Mexican immigrants and their families based their Mexican-American eateries on throughout the early era of West Side KC. Strange as it sounds, the West Side of KC is more gritty and authentic now than it was 20-30 years ago with their restaurants. Yet still, Jalapeno's has a an appropriate place in many of our minds as the go to place for really good Mexican American cuisine. Jalapeno's can sometimes have the feel of a Margarita's, Manny's, Ponak's, etc. But with one major caveat.............their food is excellent and usually consistent. On a recent visit I noticed the interior hasn't changed much besides a little updating of the paint and removal of various KC sports memorabilia (signed t-shirts and pictures) by KC Chiefs, Royals, and Tom Watson. Menu looks very similar to what I remember. All the normal goodies on many KC Mexican restaurants. Don't expect to find some of the more adventurous menu items that scare your average suburban Anglo Saxons in Johnson County, Kansas. No menudo, cabeza, barbacoa cheek, sheep, etc. Know walking in that you will taste some of the finest deep fried tacos, tamales, burritos, taco salads, beans, rice, etc south of the Kaw River. I saved the star of show at Jalapeno's for this section; Guacamole, Jalapeno Cheese Dip, red spanish rice, and their almost criminal tasting over-sized and thick corn based tortilla chips!@$!@$@ Many people have their favorite items, but these happen to be mine along with the aforementioned pork tamales. Let me explain briefly...... When it comes to Spanish (ie Mexican rice) this can turn a lot of people off or on when it comes to their favorite Mexican restaurant. Yes, it sounds absurd, but oh so true. Jalapeno's is old school when it comes to their rice. Nothing but straight red Spanish rice with a hint of beef broth enveloping this starchy goodness. No veggies, no onions, no yellow coloring. Again, straight red rice with an awesome flavor. In my opinion, one of, if not the best white jalapeno cheese dip in all of Kansas City. Same can be said for their red salsa. Oh my God........their salsa is very "plain" looking. But don't let that fool you. It is again, some of the best you will ever taste. Smooth (not chunky), little sweet, little bit of a kick/spice, and BRIGHT red. I'm telling you straight up, this stuff is ridiculous. Another oddity you will find at Jalapeno's is their chips. Larger and thicker than most others. Always piping hot with very little oil on a fresh batch. The one thing you will notice immediately is the strong corn flavor their chips impart in your pallet. Very very good. I'm a huge fan of the Mi Ranchito style chip nowadays (very light and subtle) but Jalapenos is a welcome change of pace. OK, there are some negatives if you will. Hate using the word negative, but Jalapeno's prices aren't the cheapest you'll ever come across. Never, and I mean EVER do they offer coupons. To be honest, they don't have to. Arrive on any given day at the wrong time and you will be waiting 20-40 minutes for a seat. The popularity of the place really doesn't justify offering too many discounts or coupons. This is the classic foundation of any business/economics; "Supply & Demand". Service in all honesty can be hit or miss with Jalapenos. A few of the servers are 10+ year employees. That's good and bad at the same time. Attitude and lack of energy are present on occasion. Not to call anyone out, but keep an eye on a long time waiter at Jalapeno's. Tall thin, bald gentlemen that serves as though he's hyped up on Red Bull with a shot of 5-Hour energy. I'm telling you now......be prepared and ready to order when he arrives to your table. He has no patience for indecisiveness or picky customers. Have seen this dude get customers worked up in a frenzy with his bullish style of waiting tables. He's aggressive as hell, but again has been a long time employee so they must like the guy. There are some very nice and sweet waitresses but don't be surprised to get a waitress on one of her bad attitude days. Regardless, overlook any bad customer service experiences and simply enjoy their delicious food.

Grew up in this area from the blue valley school district class of 89 and recently retired from the US Army. Live in the west coast Calif/Seattle , panama, Mexico City , etc, eating authentic Mexican food. Don 't believe the negative hype, this place is the best there is!!!the taco's are pregnant? Yum!!!so much meat!!i know there suppose to be soft taco, but I prefer the crisp. Spices, wow the chile rellenos with the spiced pork? Really!!!A-M-a-Z-I -N-G!! Prices are fantastic, you can't go to Any Other Mexican restaurant without spending more with less quality to offer. $10'sh dollar meal for dinner? Expensive? NOT!!! Go back to Taco Bell !!You cheap skate! its so great to fight for the country for 24years and to back home to Stanley for a great meal. Thanks Jalapeños for making Stanley for what it is!!!

It baffles me that Manny's South which was in the Stanley area years ago (ahead of all the growth out here) couldn't survive, but this place not only survives...it thrives I can say that the service is always fantastic. They have a great management and service staff. But the food is mediocre at best. There are so many better places for this type of Mexican food ( to be clear, this is not where you go for "authentic"). I can't help but think people just go here out of laziness and habit. I think that's the case with my parents. I would much rather make the drive to Panzon's in Lenexa. But I guess for people who are looking to stay in the South OP 151st-135th St corridor, there aren't many options. Jose Peppers at 143rd & Metcalf comes to mind and their food is better. There's also Mi Ranchito but I can't help but think the people of SoJoCo prefer the "American" staff of Jalapenos versus the "authentic" staff at Mi Ranchito. So Jalapenos wins with their consistently good service, family friendly atmosphere, and customers who aren't going to or don't have time to drive more than 5 minutes for their Mexican fix.

What a great dining experience! I had a pork fajita burrito - markinated pork, grilled & seasoned with fajita seasoning. VERY tender. Rolled in a flour tortilla with grilled onions & peppers, plus pinto beans; then smothered in red enchilada sauce. Outstanding! Some of my party did not care for the salsa; it was a bit heavy on the oregano, but I enjoyed it. We also got a bowl of queso to eat with our chips. Our server was fantastic! He even boxed up our leftovers for us to take along when we left. All together, we really enjoyed our visit to Jalapeno's!
(5)Nate C.
My family and I will never go back! Apparently if you request a particular server, they put you to the front if the line for that server in front of everybody that wasn't smart enough to request a specific server. Long story short, we have been waiting for 45 min (told 30 on arrival) but not that big of a deal. At 45 min I asked the hostess where we were on the list she told me we were the next small table. 10 min later they sat a group of 3 (same as my party) in front of us because they had requested that sever. I was fairly angry so the hostess got a manger who proceeded I try and justify their actions. For those of you wondering, the other party had only been there about 20 min and where at least a half page down the wait list from us. So if you are foolish enough to go there take my suggesting and pick a waiter on arrival.
(1)Sam L.
We walked in and were told our table would be ready in a minute and I was wondering why since there was no line. When we were seated I figured it out, they set the table up with water glasses filled and chips and salsa already on the table, how nice and refreshing, you don't get that service at any restaurant. I ordered a margarita original style and it came out perfect with lots of tequila. I hate margaritas that are overwhelmed with sugar mix. I ordered the chile relleno which is one of my favorites and it came with two but maybe three chiles. I could not tell since it was loaded with this beautiful smokey pork that I ordered extra. I also ordered the sopa beans and they were tasty with a edge of cumin that hit the back of your tongue. The waitress that took care of us was there at all times checking on us. The bus boys were constantly making sure tables were cleaned and ready for the next customer. While we were eating I watched every table leave with a to go box and that tells me you get plenty of food and especially for the low price. Anyone that wants to go to a high class restaurant in a suit and tie and feel good, go right ahead, but if you want to go to a family restaurant that makes you feel GREAT then go to Jalapeños. Good job to all of the staff there and especially to the manager who runs a tight ship.

An old Gentleman from Tijuana once told me that the more cheese is put on the Mexican dish the more the cook is trying to hide, as enough cheese - just like catsup, hides a lot of shortcomings. Let's just say cheese is the MAIN ingredient in EVERY dish at Jalapenos if that gives you an indication . . . IMHO, Taco Bell makes better, more consistent food than this place. Service is slow and rude generally speaking, but to be fair, a couple of the waitresses are fairly hot - so at least you've got something to look at while you wait, and wait and wait . . . If it weren't for the liquor (over-priced) - Jalapenos would have no redeeming qualities. (Other than the hot looking waitresses) It baffles me how people rate the food at Jalapenos as anything but swill - but they do . . . guess you will have to make your own decision if you ever get by here - just recommend you are a cheese-lover. Summary - Bad food unless you like to wallow in cheese Generally poor service with a poor attitude WAY overpriced Probably won't see you there (unless someone else is buying!) - Cruiser

After having lived in California for three years, I have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food. I went here with a group from work, and everyone assured me it was fantastic. Well, first off I thought the salsa tasted like tomato sauce, which is gross enough in itself. The beans and rice were decent, but my tacos were disgusting. Nothing authentic about them, and what's up with the meat being completely void of flavoring? Beyond all of that, what's up with using the loudspeaker to seat people? It was completely obnoxious to have the hostess sitting at her stand announcing rather loudly each time a party came in.
(2)Brandon D.
I've been coming to Jalapeno's for more than 12 years, but I slowed off around 3-4 years ago. The prices have increased dramatically ($8 for cheese dip???), the food is average, and the ambience is sub-par. But I decided to give it another go this evening...big mistake. Food was still ok, decor was still meh, but the service? TERRIBLE!!! Couldn't get the waitress to refill our drinks, and it was more than 15 min after we were done before the check came. I think she came by no more than two times. It was funny, at the exact same time, we noticed an adjacent table about 10 feet away was complaining about the same thing. We could tell the issues they were dealing with were identical. My opinion? There are much more creative and delicious options when you're looking for Mexican.

Titties!!!!
(5)Christy S.
This place is absolutely terrible ... not only is the food bad and overpriced, but the staff is extremely rude. I tried to order an enchilada with cheese and chicken ... it came out with only chicken that was extremely dry. My husband's steak burrito was overseasoned and the meat was very tough and hard to chew. My friend ordered a mixed platter with a taco and two indistinguishable, inedible items. The wait for the food was over half an hour which is apparently normal. When we tried to complain the server was very rude, did not apologize, did not offer to fix it, he said no one ever complains. The manager was even more rude, she basically stated to argue with us about the quality of the food. And to top it all off the decor of the place makes it feel like a public high school cafeteria ... which I would have gotten past if the food had been good. You could not pay me to return to this place. I have no clue how this place has gotten so many good reviews ... do yourself a favor and find Mexican food elsewhere!
(1)Ben S.
If I could give this place negative stars I would. Worst "Mexican" restaurant I've EVER been to. Upon entry we were greeted by what seemed to be a high school student. We told her how many in our party and she promptly grabs a microphone and announces the number and table number over a loud speaker for the entire restaurant to hear. I seriously felt like we were at Denny's. After seated, we received the typical chips and house salsa (possibly the worst salsa I've ever seen or tasted). We ordered two HOUSE margaritas at New York prices, $7.50 a piece!!! To top it off, they came in a dirty old coke glass. After waiting for a good half hour with NO service, we ended up ordering our now starving daughter a hamburger and french fries just so we could get out of there ASAP. This is Clearly a "local" spot. Our waitress new EVERY single person at EVERY single table. We were obviously the minority. If you're looking for a terrible place to get some overpriced drinks and below sub-par food, this is your spot! I can assure you, we will NEVER return to this dump.
(1)Bridget L.
Jalapeños has been one of our favorite KC area Mexican restaurants for years! We always get tacos and enchiladas, and they are consistently very good. The atmosphere is nothing special but the great food makes up for it. It's a nice touch to have waters and chips/salsa already at the table when taken to your seat, and hubby likes the TV'a throughout the venue to watch sports. We will be back soon!
(4)Amy S.
Food was tasty but I feel like the quality has gone down hill some over the last few years. There is still always a long line waiting on the weekends. Service is friendly.
(3)J C.
Rounding up to 5 due to all the 1 and 2 star reviews. Where's the love? Salsa's great (oregano twang similar to Manny's). Chubby Burrito is as good as they get. Enchiladas and rice are also very good. Prices are a little steep, but there are lunch and dinner specials. Waitstaff is typically very good. Always have a helpful shadow crew of sauce and chips refillers. Decor used to be very rough, but was updated over the last 1-2 years and is now respectable. Blows Mi Ranchito away. Be aware of the big dinner crowds on weekend nights!
(5)M S.
Get rid of the Very LOUD and unnecessary table seating announcements. Go buy some headsets for your staff and stop torturing your customers! Seriously annoying!!! Food is subpar.
(1)Noah F.
I know the prices aren't cheap, but I think the food is worth it and everything tastes great.
(5)Olathe R.
Used to be better. Music was WAY TOO LOUD. 2 out of 4 diners at our table received the wrong order & were stuck with it when the server didn't return for a long time. The long wait isn't worth the below average atmosphere, ridiculous NOISE level, & so-so food. Every item on my plate sort of tasted the same. However, if you just want chips & dip & can come at an off-time, it's probably worth it. (A serving of cheese dip is about $8, though.)
(2)Jared P.
The food here is just OK... But Jaime(sp) the waitress on Monday nights is amazing. I mostly go for her and the beer. The joke is she's my AA sponsor. :)
(4)John B.
Recently moved from TX best TexMex I have found in the KC area. Cheese enchiladas are excellent.
(5)Magan T.
We recently moved to the neighborhood and was going to Jalapenos for our Mexican food fix. We always ordered the cheese dip, which was OK, but I was never as satisfied with my meal. I tried a beef and bean burrito and found it had too many beans and the beef was dried out. I tried a soft taco and found it bland as well. On our last visit I had a plain chicken quesadilla and was still not very satisfied. I think there are better places in the area for Mexican food. Also, what's with the wait for a table? You come in and there are tables available, but they have to "set up" a table with chips and water BEFORE you can sit. I'd rather sit and look over the menu while I wait for the chips and salsa... not stand at the door.
(2)Jaime F.
There is never any question what my parents are doing on Monday night. I know not to call between the hours of 6-8. If I need something I should call after 8 because they will both be content, full and happy. "Taco Monday" has been something I have only heard about but as of yesterday it has been experienced. I remember Jalapenos as an afterwork spot in high school when I was putting in time (and wearing lots of flair) at Applebees. Returning a solid 6 years later the place hasn't changed, a comfort I have come to expect with many establishments when visiting. The wait wasn't long and the loudspeaker announcements of prepared tables ensured we had time to belly up to the bar. Frosty brews in hand I observed the signage-while the flavored margaritas are apparenty $7.50 (I felt like i was back in NY with that price tag) the $1.50 draws are definitely a deal and go down fast. Dinner was great-the cheese dip just a creamy and delicious as I remembered, the guacamole as chunky and fresh and I had hoped and the tacos deliciously loaded with fresh ingredients. The staff is also a source of warmth, they are extremely efficient and the whole place runs like a well oiled machine. The chip basket never went empty my beers were replineshed with lightning speed and no one seemed to hate the fact they were there working. I understand why this makes Mondays a source of happiness in their week.
(5)Lea K.
If you want Mexican food at a good price and you are in the area...come here. The food and the service are good. I usually get the cheese enchiladas with cheese sauce (since their enchilada sauce has chicken broth). This place really doesn't stand out except for that it is good food at a good price.
(3)Keith C.
Really liked this little place
(5)Andrew R.
This place is THE mexican place in south Johnson County. There's generally a wait during the peak of the dinner hour seven days a week. Their Jalapeno dip is amazing and the Jalapeno dip burrito is really good too. This place is really cheap too, three of us can typically eat for $20-25. The service is always good and sometimes too quick, but overall this is the place to get great mexican food if you're in south Johnson County.
(5)CJ L.
I absolutely love Jalapenos. When I return from Los Angeles to visit my family, and we always have dinner here at least once. They have great frozen margaritas, and recently, they seem to have added a bunch of flavored margaritas. I tried the pomegranate frozen margarita and quite enjoyed it. The drinks aren't too expensive, and they have quite a few Mexican beers. They have a bar to enjoy chips and drinks if you go on a busy night. Evenings on weekends are usually pretty busy and have at least some wait. We always get the Jalapeno cheese dip, and their salsa is borderline addicting. The chips are warm and deliciously thin. Everything I've had here, I like. The enchiladas are great, love the chimichanga, always like the loaded nachos, and the chiles rellenos are pretty good too. All the food is really cheesy, so definitely American though nothing like the nasty tex-mex that you end up with at a lot of Mexican restaurants in the KC area.
(5)Darren H.
I've been eating here for 11 years and the food and service are consistently good. There is an endless supply of chips and salsa -- which are both quickly replenished when the basket or bowl gets low. The pricing is very reasonable and it is a great family restaurant. The decor could use some updating, but I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Mexican food.
